Top 3 Rules for a Healthier Pull Apart Garlic Bread
Pull apart Garlic bread are one of my top 10 fun party food ideas when I have got friends home. Usually I love to serve a Low Carb Version of this Pull Apart Garlic Bread using eggplant instead of bread – get the recipe here. But this week end was cold and rainy and French always comfort with bread and cheese. So let me tell you how you can make an healthier cheesy pull apart Garlic bread! First, choose the right bread! The best bread to make pull apart garlic bread is a dense white bread that hold well together. Avoid bread from the bakery aisle of the supermarket – always too soft and usually loaded with additives, oil and preservatives too. While white bread also tend to miss on nutrient and fibre watch the ingredient list to spot more nourishing white flour. I choose a Turkish Pide bread from Bakeworks. It is a gluten free bread loaf made of rice flour, tapioca flour but also psyllium husk (100% fibre !) and sesame seeds. The texture is absolutely perfect to make cut the bread in diagonal and create diamonds easy to pull apart when baked.
I choose low fat grated mozzarella cheese to limit the saturated fat intake. Mozzarella cheese is also the one that create the most beautiful cheese string in pull apart garlic bread. Plus grated mozzarella is the cheese with the less sodium intake – compared to grated Edam, Colby and Cheddar. It is always good to check the sodium when you buy cheese and anything around 300 mg/100 g of product is fair.
A classic pull apart garlic bread is made of butter. I recommend to switch butter by virgin olive oil for a healthier recipe. Olive oil contains lots of healthy omega 3 and low saturated fat compared to butter – the one often responsible for heart disease. Olive oil is your best option however if you don’t like the strong taste of olive oil you can choose avocado oil or almond oil.
So yes this recipe is not the healthiest on earth but still, it is very comforting on cold rainy week end. I believe that clean eating is all about balance – eating clean 80% of the week and indulging on more traditional food 20% of your time. It is all I balance my health and weight. No frustration with the 80?20 rule! So this week end don’t feel guilty if you indulge on some pull apart garlic bread. It is ok sometime 🙂
Enjoy the recipe.
