What Are Nuts?

Nuts are the seeds of a tree that is contained in a hard nutshell such as:

  • Hazelnuts
  • Cashews
  • Acorns
  • Pistachios
  • Chestnuts

Not all nuts are considered Tree Nuts, which are the most allergen seeds.

Tree Nuts are both fruits and seeds, but some nuts are only seeds, they are called drupes.

Some common Drupes are:

  • Brazil Nuts
  • Coconuts
  • Pecans
  • Almonds
  • Macadamia
  • Candlenuts
  • Walnuts

Are Drupes Nuts?

Drupes are not nuts in the botanical sense. They are nut-like tryma.

They are technically just seeds.

Are Peanuts Nuts?

Peanuts are, despite their name, neither nuts or drupes. They are in fact legumes.

They grow in the ground and are very different from tree nuts.

Common Nut Allergens

While not all nuts are true botanical nuts, there are a number of ingredients called nuts that are common allergens.

The following nuts in the culinary sense are considered allergens:

What Is The Nut-Free Diet?

The Nut-Free diet attempts to remove all of the aforementioned culinary nuts from all food.

The nut-free diet doesn’t adhere to the botanical definition of nuts but instead to the list of declarable nut-like allergens.
