So keep reading to learn how to make this paleo frosting recipe now!

Keto Chocolate Frosting

If you are craving chocolate frosting in the middle of the day, this keto chocolate icing will be your go-to keto chocolate frosting.

Is Chocolate Frosting Keto?

Classic chocolate frosting is delicious, but it’s normally made with powdered sugar, regular milk, and regular cocoa powder.

These three ingredients alone are loaded with sugar, bringing more than 50 grams of net carbs per serving of classic chocolate frosting.

It’s therefore not keto-friendly at all!

Keto Chocolate Frosting

How To Make Keto Chocolate Frosting

This keto frosting recipe is not only low in carbs, but it’s also a paleo frosting for cakes.

The sugar-free frosting recipe is made of 5 easy healthy wholesome ingredients approved for both diets.

Ingredients

Let’s see what you need to make this easy healthy frosting recipe.

  • Grass-fed butter – a perfectly keto-friendly dairy product.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Unsweetened almond milk – which has almost no carbs compared to regular milk.
  • Powdered Erythritol or Chocolate stevia drops

Making The Keto Chocolate Frosting

Making this keto cake frosting takes less than 10 minutes.

Start by adding the soft butter to a large mixing bowl.

Tip: Take Butter Out Of The Fridge

Take your butter out of the fridge for two to three hours before using it for perfect softness. Butter, unlike other dairy products, doesn’t go bad quickly.

So you can safely have it on your counter.

Beat butter with an electric beater until light and fluffy about 30 to 40 seconds at a fast speed.

Stop the hand mixer and add the almond milk, powdered erythritol, and unsweetened cocoa powder.

Beat the low-carb chocolate frosting again, but this time on a slow-speed setting because the cocoa powder is very volatile.

Adjust the texture of your frosting with almond milk if it’s too thick.

Taste the keto frosting for sweetness. If it’s not sweet enough, add a few more stevia drops.

Storage Instructions

This recipe makes many servings, 36 of them to be precise. And each serving represents 2 tablespoons.

You can store your keto chocolate icing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

But, you may not eat all this keto frosting recipe in 4 days, so I recommend freezing your frosting in an ice cube tray.

Fill each ice cube tray with 2 tablespoons of frosting and freeze.

When your chocolate frosting craving is coming, defrost 1 ice cube, it will take just 1 hour to get soft at room temperature.

Another option is to thaw your snack the day before in the fridge.

Note that this recipe is not soft straight out of the fridge! It softens at room temperature as butter solidifies in the fridge.

Using Keto Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

There are many options for using this keto frosting.

First, on its own as a keto snack to reach your fat macros. In fact, 2 tablespoons of this healthy frosting will get you 10 grams of fat for only 100 kcal and 0.8 grams of net carbs!

It means this is the perfect healthy sweet keto snack.

Then, you can use this keto chocolate frosting recipe to decorate any keto desserts or birthday cake like my keto cake, keto vanilla cake, or keto chocolate cake.

It’s also delicious on top of a low-carb cookie like my 2-Ingredient Keto Cookies or my keto chocolate cupcakes.

Finally, you can use this frosting on top of a keto chocolate mug cake!

This Keto Frosting is a simple Keto chocolate buttercream frosting perfect to frost keto cakes or eat as a keto snack with only 0.3 grams of net carbs per serving.
Prep: 10 minutes
Total: 10 minutes
Yield: 36 servings (2 tbsp)
Serving Size: 2 tablespoons

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cup Unsalted Butter soft, cubed, at room temperature for 1 hours
  • ½ cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • ½ cup Powdered Erythritol erythritol or allulose works best
  • 1-2 tablespoons Unsweetened Almond Milk at room temperature, add up to 2-4 tablespoons extra to reach your favorite consistency
This recipe may contain Amazon or other affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, add the cubes of soft butter. Your butter must be very soft and out of the fridge for at least 30 minutes. It is easier to first cut your cold butter into small cubes. Then, pack those cubes into a measuring cup. Finally, transfer the cubes of cold butter into a bowl and wait until it's at room temperature.
  • Beat butter with an electric beater for 30 seconds until fluffy and soft.
  • Stop the beater and add the remaining ingredients: powdered sweetener (I used powdered allulose), unsweetened cocoa powder, and unsweetened almond milk.
  • Beat again at a slow speed at first to prevent the cocoa powder from bursting out of the bowl, then increase to medium speed. If the frosting is too thick to your liking, add more almond milk (at room temperature, not cold!), 1 tablespoon at a time, beat, and add up to 2 tablespoons of extra milk until you reach your favorite texture. The more you add, the fluffier it will be. However, it won't affect your net carbs per serving very much (around 0.1g extra net carbs).
  • Adjust stevia drops if the frosting is not sweet enough for you. Always add stevia 2 drops at a time as it is very strong in flavor. Otherwise, add powdered erythritol but note that this option thickens the frosting a lot!
  • Serve as a snack, 2 tablespoons at a time, on top of a keto mug cake, or on its own as a fat bomb snack. You can also frost my keto birthday cake with this recipe.

Storage

  • Store the frosting in the fridge in an airtight box for up to 4 days. The frosting gets hard in the fridge because the butter hardens at cold temperatures. Simply remove the frosting from the fridge for 3 hours to get it soft and creamy again.
  • Freeze in ice cube tray, 2 tablespoons in each cube hole, and defrost at least 2 hours before, at room temperature to soften.

Hi! I want to make this cake for my inlaws who are celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary. My father in law is diabetic and this is my first venture into keto baking. question. Can i use cashew creamer/milk, heavy cream, regular milk vs almond milk?

  2. 5 stars
I don’t do a lot of baking, so this was my first time using an electric mixer. I definitely messed something up, mine didn’t get mixed as well as it should have. That being said, even after my mistake this was absolutely amazing. This is a dangerous recipe, because it’s so good that you’ll want to eat the whole bowl as soon as you make it.

  3. 5 stars
Simple, easy to follow, no frills, and adjustable recipe! I jazzed mine up with either mint, orange zest or hazelnuts.
    Hazelnuts & raspberries –
    Thank you!

Question: My butter was room temp for atleast 2 hours but i did not beat the butter prior to mixing in the remaining ingredients; would this lead to a grainy texture? Mine is not smoothing out like yours

    • Sure! You can add 2-3 tablespoons of powdered erythritol like Swerve. It will be very good too. Enjoy, XOXO Carine.

  5. HiCarine, thanks for all the recipes I have so far tried from you, most have turned out quite well and my husband is always grateful as he loves anything sweet. I cannot find almond butter in my local supermarket would it be ok to just use butter for the chocolate frosting or cream cheese.
Thanks again for all the time you spend helping us less knowledgeable than yourself

    • Thanks so much for making so many of my recipes ! The best substitute to almon butter in this recipe will be first peanut butter (unsweetened, unsalted), sunflower seed butter or cream cheese. All the options will work well and taste delicious. Enjoy the treat and any question just ask as always I love to help you, XOXO Carine.
